Tax time. Tomorrow's tax time. I never love the tax time, but we have to do it, just like everyone else. Pull all the records together and give the big picture of our finances over to the government so they can settle accounts with us.
Money. What is it about money? Value abstracted from value and made value in its own right; like words divorced and remarried viz the the matrix of meanings; like an activists slogan picked up by the next generation and turned into a marketing jingle. You say these words, you sing these songs, and your speaking the ironic downfall of your own narrative. You put your attention on money and you're already lost. It's a portal to distracted confusion. Yet is the fundamental unit of social interaction within an urbanized system. It is the unfeeling face of the city that has caused social theorists to shudder even as they sing the praises of modern achievement and possibility.
Money and taxes, I have to hold both lightly. If only it were that easy. The whole mouths to feed thing; the whole social expectation thing; the whole way-the-world-works thing. Young idealists scoff at these things, young fathers are broken by these things, old men weep over these things. Yet I tell myself I have to hold both lightly.
Holding money lightly is truly a miracle. It is striking a rock and having water flow from it (not just once, but for the entirety of life). It breaks the natural order, it stands against any known law or law of knowledge. Holding money lightly is an act of the living God. It is an act of salvation. Those who are freed from money are totally free, they are absolute and powerful actors, they are those whom God uses to recreate the world.
When you cease to see money, you are given the ability to look beyond your own needs to the needs of others. When you stop reaching for the abstracted dollar, you start striving for the concrete change. Lord, help us! The God we trust cannot be the one printed on the dollar bill, we need you, the one who speaks life into existence, to bear us up out of nothing into real standing and power in this strange world.
Even now I speak in abstractions. Give me the power to live with you and to enter into the moment in which I stand.
